In rollapadu wildlife sanctuary of Andhra Pradesh, India. I have spotted out Eurasian eagle owl(Bubo bubo). It has layed 4 eggs out of which 2 died and one was eaten up by the elder one. I have also spotted southern spotted owlet(Athene brama) and short eared owl(Asio flammeus). I have a doubt do these Bubo bubo feed on sankes.? I hav found them feeding their young with barred wolf snake, i think a russel's viper. I found this as very intresting.. Some one plz help me in leeting know abt the diet prfferences of Bubo bubo in wild..

Yes, owls will eat snakes. Some larger owls can catch and kill venomous snakes. A Russel's Viper is a dangerous snake, but some owls are quite capable of killing it. A EEO is capable of catching prey up to around 15 pounds (6-7 kg). If I remember correctly rabbits are their preferred prey. Hope this helps.

If they eat a venomous snake, would the venom make them sick?

Sorry.. snakes venom is poisonous only if it enters the blood directly. But it's not poisonous if they feed on it. So owls won't be sick. donn worry.

I have seen GHO's take rattlesnakes. They usually catch it near the head, and then dehead (dispatch) it while in flight. If they get tagged by the rattlesnake it is fatal. But, this rarely happens. EEO's are strong then a GHO, and probably do the same thing. The venomous snakes in India are far more venomous then rattlesnakes. Especially the Russel's Viper.

I know that when owls eat rodents who have been exposed to rat poison or pesticides it can be fatal, but that's interesting about not being affected by the venom of snakes.

Venom is only poisonous if it is injected into your bloodstream. They don't eat the head where the poison would be. But, if they get tagged death comes quickly.
