Our owl box has been the home to a barn owl family all spring, and they have been VERY active and noisy all night. But yesterday during our heat wave here in the SouthWest, the "baby" owl who appears to be nearly grown but not flying yet according to his featherage, sat on the outside of the owl box for at least 3 hours in the 100 degree heat, right in the sun. The parents were nowhere in sight of course. Perhaps this is normal sunbathing behavior but in seven years of having this owl box we've never seen this before. Does anyone have any wisdom to offer about this? We feel this owl family has stayed in the box much longer than previous years, too; usually the noises stop around April as the babies grow up and go away.
