Why the interest in starting a study group?

The interest in starting a Grass Owl Study Group, is mainly because of the importance of these birds. Over the last few years Grass Owls have become a priority species to conserve, but due to lack of funding and manpower, not much has been done. This resulted in Grass Owl habitat being destroyed, because not enough pressure is being put on the need to conserve this species.

The aim of this group.

• Establishing what projects are currently running, concerning Grass Owls.
Who is conducting the project and what their aim is.
• Establishing location of suitable Grass Owl habitat, and by using GPS co-ordinates hopefully be able to draw a map of these areas.
• Making contact with rehabilitation centers, to establish how many Grass Owls get handed to them, and why.
• Enable farmers to help promote the conservation of Grass Owls.
• Distribute scientific papers to all the persons involved with Grass Owls, including rehabilitation centers.
• And provide a link for all these projects to gain information and knowledge.
• Through research and networking, create a powerful group with a “scientific” foot to stand on, to promote and enforce the conservation of Grass Owls

Johannesburg Zoo can provide academic and field work advice where asked for, but the main aim of this group will be to enable researchers to become involved, and network, sharing ideas and information and working together on a cause well worth fighting for.

In conclusion

Any persons, currently working on Grass Owls or who are interested in getting involved, are more than welcome to share their information and ideas with this group. All information received will be published in a news letter, and names, organizations, sponsors of these projects, as well as the names of the people conducting these studies will be mentioned.

The Grass Owl Study Group will only act as a link and will not take any credit for any of the research done. All the information received will be send through to the Birds of Prey Working group.

Please consider joining the group it will only enhance the Grass Owls’ chance of surviving.
