Some information about the contents of this list:

About for ten years, the author was engaged collecting paintings, photos and datas, and visiting museums, zoos, aviaries etc., to create a complete list.

For all living and recently extinct taxon of owls (Strigiformes) are given:

scientific name, author of scientific name, scientific synonyms, recommended names in English, German, French and Spanish (sometimes Portuguese for South America).

Further a brief description of geographic range and preferred habitat. For each taxon, as far as established is given: length ( total ) mm, body-mass ( in grams ), and length of wings, tail, tarsus and bill in mm.

For all taxon further are given: locations of museums with skin collection, reference to paintings ( early litho –

graphs and etchings ~ 1700 – 1920 ), and a critically selection of later paintings and line drawings ( in journals, books etc. 1920 – up to date ), reference to photographs ( mainly from birds alive ), and last, but not least a reference list to literature ( Journals, Fieldguides, Monographs, Handbooks etc. ).

Statements to presumed superspecies are not indicated. Remarks are given to taxon, whose status is doubtful or

noticeable to morphologically aspects.

To show the shortfall of primary-tips ( from wingpoint ), significant for wing-formulas, tables are listed, mainly concerning the difficult tribe Otini , and with some examples for other genera and species. Completed with about 100 line-drawings of flying owls, with upward wingstroke.

The list isn't an identification guide. However most taxon listed, can be identified by making use of König, Weick & Becking ( 1999 ): Owls and Del Hoyo, Elliott & Sargatal ( 1999 ): Handbook, Owls.

Besides the line drawings, some painted colour plates growing recently described or rediscovered owl-species.

This list, finally, especially the information on paintings and photos, was created on behalf of the growing number of owllovers worldwide! The first impulse was given by Eck & Busse ( 1973 ), with their fine book, a real place of informations.

Friedhelm Weick, born in Karlsruhe , Germany , has observed and drawn birds since early childhood. But for 35 years he worked as designer in the mechanical industry.

Throughout this time he painted birds, and since 1965 he was a professional illustrator and wildlife artist.

1977 – 79 he has studied graphic-design, and since 1988 he worked at the Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe, a job wich entails painting a complete range of animals and plants.

He has illustrated over 100 books, including most volumes of the definitive Handbuch der Vögel Mitteleuropas, (U. N. Glutz von Blotzheim, publisher, 1971 – 97) and Avifauna Baden Württembergs (J. Hölzinger, publisher, 1987 up to date).

His work has appeard in all leading German wildlife magazins. In addition he has published some books on his own right or as co-author, including Birds of Prey of the World , bilingual in collaboration with L. H. Brown (1980), Owls, a Guide to the Owls of the World , as Co-author and illustrator together with C. König and J. H. Becking (1999) and Anmut im Federkleid, heimische Vögel , as co-author and illustrator with O. Kröher (2004).
